I love the idea of having Kitchen Island. But the old one was small and too close to the cabinets around. And when you open the refrigerator, you are smashed against the island. This layout didn’t work and had to be changed completely. And, again, thanks to having professional on your team, the new layout she created was completely different and modern. We would never even think of something like that!

It turned out so fabulous! What a transformation. This new island has added much needed storage space where we needed it. Before we got the island, we had only one drawer in the entire kitchen! Notice the matching dog. We plan on eventually staining all the woodwork in the room (cupboards, shelves, sills) the same dark espresso color. Our theory is that it will contrast beautifully with the white tiles and appliances and give us a more updated, modern looking kitchen.

I still need to take pictures of the other two uninteresting walls, but this is why I have been MIA a lot in the last couple of months. I will probably upload all the inbetween pictures too and then make a lovely slideshow for all our friends and family. I put the handles on and painted all the woodwork--which is mostly on the other two sides. I also helped lay the vinyl. Here's a closeup of the back splash. You can go to the Kitchen Remodel set to see the pictures of the hideous kitchen before. Jacob & Brian tore the kitchen out down to the walls and we burned the kitchen at a bbq the weekend after the 4th of July. Though, I wasn't feeling well and we went home before I got to actually see it burn. The cabinets, counter top and sink are all from IKEA. Everything else is courtesy of the Home Depot.

The work goes on. The cabinets are installed in the kitchen and I'm very happy with them. They're the white applad doors from Ikea - a high quality enamel finish that looks like it should hold up. The pulls were a real find on a trip to Lowe's. I think they have a real 50's space age retro feel that almost makes the cabinets look like the old white metal ones that were common in the day. It's starting to resemble the plan. Now for the island.
